BUDGET Photography Gear SHOOTOUT | ft. Will Cadena | Ep 14

BUDGET Photography Gear

As a professional photographer, I've often heard the saying, "It's not the camera, but the photographer that makes a great image." Intrigued by this idea, I decided to embark on an experiment to test its validity. In collaboration with my fellow photographer and Canon enthusiast, Will Kadena, we took on a challenge: to capture stunning photos using entry-level or outdated gear. Welcome to the Budget Photography Gear Shootout!

Setting the Stage: Our adventure unfolded at the Imaging USA event in National Harbor, Maryland. Equipped with Canon EOS Rebel T7, a camera that feels surprisingly lightweight and almost toy-like, we delved into the world of budget gear. Alongside the Rebel T7, we had the 18-55mm kit lens and the beloved "nifty fifty" 50mm lens at our disposal. It was time to put our skills to the test.

Introducing Our Model: To make things even more interesting, we had the pleasure of working with our model, Joy. Puns were encouraged, and we were ready to capture some amazing shots.

The Challenge Begins: With our gear in hand, we kicked off the shootout. Each photographer had the freedom to shoot to their heart's content, while keeping in mind the limitations of the equipment. Our goal was to showcase our creative abilities despite the constraints.

Learning to Adapt: As we began shooting, we realized that working with outdated gear presented some challenges. Will and I, accustomed to the advanced technology of the latest Canon cameras, found ourselves grappling with muscle memory and adjustments. The Rebel T7 lacked some of the features we had grown accustomed to, such as the ability to view exposures in the live view.

Overcoming Obstacles: Undeterred by the hurdles, we pressed on. We experimented with compositions, poses, and lighting, aiming to capture the essence of our model and the surrounding environment. Despite occasional frustrations, we embraced the opportunity to push our creative boundaries.

Unveiling the Results: After the shooting session, it was time to review and select our best shots. We eagerly analyzed the images, each capturing our unique style and approach. Will's photography showcased a vibrant, saturated aesthetic, while mine leaned towards a contrasty, high-fashion look.

The Power of Post-Processing: With our favorite shots selected, it was time to edit and prepare them for printing. We turned to Canon's PIXMA Pro 200 printer, an affordable option that delivers excellent results. Choosing between luster and matte paper, we sought to enhance the qualities of our images and evoke their intended moods.

You Decide: Now, dear readers, it's your turn to be the judge. We present to you our final prints: an unconventional crop with an edgy vibe and a soft, delicate image on matte paper. Take a moment to appreciate the distinct characteristics of each photograph and cast your vote for your favorite.

Conclusion: Through the Budget Photography Gear Shootout, we set out to explore the age-old question of whether it's the camera or the photographer that truly matters. Our experience demonstrated that despite working with budget equipment, skilled photographers can still capture stunning images. It's the eye behind the lens, the creativity, and the ability to adapt that truly make the difference.

We hope you enjoyed this episode of our budget gear series. Let us know in the comments who you'd like us to collaborate with next. Don't forget to cast your vote for your preferred photograph and follow my fellow photographers for more amazing content. Thank you for joining me on this adventure! Stay tuned for more exciting projects. Until next time!
