What a Canon Explorer of Light Actually Does at a Family Session
Aug 17, 2026
What does a professional family photographer actually do during a session?
It's a lot more than telling everyone to smile and look at the camera.
When you're photographing families, especially ones with young kids, the goal is real connection and real personality, not stiff, posed smiles. During this session with Amanda, Dino, and their son Eli, I used a mix of simple posing, movement, and playful prompts to keep everyone engaged and loose.
Give Families Direction
Most families aren't models. They shouldn't be expected to know how to pose, and they don't.
So skip "just act natural." That never works. Give clear direction instead. Tell them where to stand, where to look, how to interact with each other. Ask a parent to look at their child, give them a kiss, or just talk to each other. Simple prompts like these get you far more natural expressions than any generic instruction ever will.
Get Kids Moving
Movement is your best friend when kids are involved.
Don't ask a child to sit still and smile. Give them something fun to do instead. In this session, playful interaction and movement did the heavy lifting, pulling out genuine smiles and real laughter.
Not every prompt lands. That's fine. You just try again and adjust.
Focus on Connection
The best family photos aren't always the ones where everyone's staring at the camera.
Watch for what happens between the poses:
- A parent laughing with their child
- Siblings playing together
- A couple looking at each other
- A kid reacting naturally to something
- Everyone cracking up at the unexpected
These are the moments that tell the real story of a family.
Create an Experience, Not Just Photos
Being a great family photographer isn't only about knowing your camera. It's knowing how to communicate, how to pose people, how to work with kids, and how to build an environment where real moments can actually happen.
Give your clients direction. Keep things moving. Let the session get a little playful.
Because the best family photos usually aren't the perfectly posed ones. They're the ones that capture how a family actually feels together.
