I Swore I Wouldn’t Do This… How Listening Transformed My Photography Business
Have you ever scrolled through a bride’s Facebook post and noticed hundreds of photographers commenting, yet none of them actually read what she wrote? That’s exactly what I saw one day — and it changed everything for me and for one bride named Krysta.
The Common Mistake Photographers Make
As photographers, it’s tempting to think that visibility equals success. You see a post, drop your portfolio, and hope for the best. But here’s the problem: most photographers don’t actually listen.
Hundreds of photographers were responding to Krysta’s post with generic messages like:
- “Here’s my work!”
- “I’m available, send me a DM!”
She ignored all of them — because they weren’t addressing her concerns. It’s like showing up to a job interview and shouting your resume without even knowing what the company needs.
What I Did Differently
Instead of a generic pitch, I actually read her post carefully. I responded to the one thing that mattered most to her: retouching and editing.
Here’s what I shared with Krysta:
- How I smooth skin in an age-appropriate way
- How I handle flyaway hair, blemishes, and glare
- Even things like tattoo removal or fixing wardrobe issues
I didn’t mention pricing at first. Instead, I focused on providing peace of mind — showing her I understood her worries and could deliver beyond expectations.
The Result
Krysta's response was immediate. She said, “You’re the first person to actually read my post!”
Not only did she book me for her wedding, but she doubled her original budget. Post-wedding, she shared:
“I can’t express how thankful I am that you reached out. Every photo radiates magic, elegance, and emotion. You truly see your clients.”
She received:
- 1,600 hand-edited images
- Full retouching for every photo she chose
- Behind-the-scenes Instagram and TikTok videos of her day
- A five-star review calling me a storyteller and visionary
The Lesson for Photographers
This experience taught me a crucial lesson: listening pays.
1. Listening Beats Pitching
Responding to a client’s actual concerns creates trust immediately. You don’t need to shout about your portfolio — let your empathy and expertise shine.
2. Premium Attention Sells Premium Prices
When you provide a high-level client experience from the very first interaction, clients expect to pay more.
3. Client Experience is the True Differentiator
Technical photography skills are important, but most clients can’t tell the difference between good and great photos. They can notice how they feel throughout the process — seen, heard, and understood.
My Rule of Thumb
If you want to charge $10K for weddings, you need to give your clients a $20K experience.
That experience starts with reading their post or message and responding thoughtfully. Show them you see them as a human, not just another wedding to book.
Final Thoughts
In a market where everyone is shouting, the person who whispers “I hear you” wins. Listening isn’t hard. It doesn’t cost anything. But the return on that attention can literally transform your business.
For Krysta, it meant having the wedding of her dreams captured perfectly. For me, it meant booking a premium client and building trust that lasts a lifetime.
